Monday, August 27, 2012 IndyCar to Host STEM Education Day at Grand Prix of Baltimore
 by Denise M. Abbott
INDIANAPOLIS -- Baltimore-area students will get to use the racetrack as their classroom when INDYCAR plays host to a STEM-focused education day during the Grand Prix of Baltimore.
On Thursday, August 30, local students will get a behind-the-scenes look at how science, technology, engineering and math principles apply to the IZOD IndyCar Series at the temporary street circuit.
More than 150 seventh- and eighth-grade students from the Bluford Drew Jemison STEM Academy will meet with INDYCAR engineers to learn about key elements of the 2012 IZOD IndyCar Series car, including the enhanced chassis, turbocharged engine, E85 fuel, electronics and Firestone Firehawk tires.
Engineers also will focus on key elements that play a significant role in IZOD IndyCar Series racing such as the effects of aerodynamics, fuel mileage, tire friction and rolling resistance and other Race Day applications of math and science.
"As a sport deeply rooted in science and engineering, we feel it's important to create opportunities for students to see classroom curriculum applied to real-world situations," said Kasey Coler, vice president of marketing, INDYCAR. "We hope our at-track program illustrates to students how the principles of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math apply to INDYCAR in a unique and interesting way."
The day will include a meeting with Mazda Road to Indy drivers as well as a discussion on career opportunities in motorsports.
"This is more than a once in a lifetime opportunity," said Kelvin Bridgers, Principal of Bluford Drew Jemison STEM Academy. "INDYCAR's STEM Education Day gives our scholars the chance to see how what they are learning in the classroom fits into the real world and how they can turn this knowledge into a relevant and enjoyable career."
INDYCAR's STEM education event celebrates the 2nd Annual Grand Prix of Baltimore presented by SRT, which takes place Labor Day weekend in the heart of downtown Baltimore along the Inner Harbor. The three-day event features the IZOD IndyCar Series on Sunday, September 2, at 2:30 p.m. Tickets for the Grand Prix of Baltimore and race information can be found at the official event website: www.RaceOnBaltimore.com or through all Ticketmaster outlets. Tickets orders can also be placed by phone at 800-745-3000.
