 by Gerald Laurie
The 2008 Supermodified Racing Association Points Championship is the closest race for the Western States Supermodifieds in years. Seven races into the season, only sixty five points separate veteran competitor Jeff Russell and perennial champ Troy Regier. Russell leads the championship with 1272 points and three wins. Regier has 1207 points and also has three victories. Young Bobby Dalton is third with 1164 points and several top five finishes. Sophomore competitor Bryan Warf is in fourth place with 920 points and a single win. Whitey Janssen rounds out the top five with 883 points.
The sixth through ninth places are held by Madera Speedway 360 Supermodified Teams. These teams compete with the SMRA cars at Madera Speedway and earn points toward their own Track Championship as well as the SMRA Championship. These competitors include Donnie Large, David Tuey, Lance Tatro, and Kenney Kinchen. 2007 Champion, Martin McKeefery is tenth after missing several races with engine problems.
In eleventh place is Madera 360 veteran Lance Jackson followed by Kenny White who has earned points in both the 360 class and the number 96 SMRA car. After moving up to the number 96, Kenney has missed several races due to engine problems as well. Perennial top five points getter Jim Birges is down in thirteenth after suffering a stolen race car and then engine problems in his borrowed ride. Pat Whittet is fourteenth with a limited schedule, and Madera 360 pilot Larry Hinz rounds out the top fifteen. A total of 27 drivers in 26 different racecars have earned points so far in 2008.
The Supermodified Racing Association has two races remaining in the 2008 season and upwards of twenty racers are expected for each event. Russell and Regier are locked in a very tight battle that could go down to the wire. Dalton is lurking a scant 100 points back in case the leaders should stumble. Dalton could help his chances considerably with a winning run in one or both of the remaining races.
The winged roadsters of the Supermodified Racing Association next take to the track at the annual Harvest Classic at Madera Speedway on September 20, 2008.
