EAST MOLINE, Ill. -- Wednesday night at the Rock Island County Fair was the second running of the Hershel Roberts Memorial. It was a night to honor, Quad City Speedway Hall of Famer, the late Hershel Roberts. Always a fan favorite, Roberts piloted the #58 for many years at Quad City Speedway. After Roberts racing career ended he stayed right in the thick of the action with Ray Guss Jr. taking over the driver duties of the #58. The main event of the evening was a 58 lap IMCA Late Model Deery Brothers Summer Series feature to pay tribute to the legendary driver.

In the Deery Brothers Summer Series feature “The River City Hustler” Ray Guss Jr. came through big in the most important date in 2012 racing schedule. Wheatland, Iowa’s, Justin Kay would lead the first 40 laps running the bottom side of track with pole sitter Todd Malmstrom in hot pursuit running up against the wall. Malmstrom would take over the lead on the 41st lap with Guss, who started 11th, all over his bumper. Guss would take over the lead after Malmstrom clipped the wall with in turn one and two. Guss would go until challenged the final two laps. Quad City Speedway regular, Mike Cothron finished a very strong third with Malmstrom taking 4th and Deery Brothers points leader, Jeff Aikey, coming home 5th.

Colona’s Chris Lawrence continued his hot streak, in the Extreme Auto Glass Street Stock, by winning his third feature in a row at the Quad City Speedway. A late race caution set-up a side by side duel between C. Lawrence and Emily Gade for the $1,000 top prize. C. Lawrence would hug the tires around the bottom of the track with Gade running all the way up against the wall. Once again Ms. Gade would take second with Chuck Fox, who started 18th, taking third followed by Jerry Pratt and Dwaine Hasson.
