Sunday, June 24, 2012 American Modified Series returns to MRP on Kid’s Night

WILLIAMSBURG, Oho -- The American Modified Series returned to Moler Raceway Park for the first time in 2012 and it was a stacked field of 32 cars on hand seeking the $1500 to win prize money. In the Williams Precision Engines qualifications it was Devin Gilpin claiming top spot with an overall fast time of 14.265 lap. In the Hypercoil Springs first heat race it was Kentucky driver Clay Miller taking the checkers followed by Church Hill Tennessee’s Shon Flannary in second spot. Wiles Driveshaft heat #2 victory went to Greensburg, Ky Bryan Barber with Maysville, Ky’s, Jeremie Bretz coming home in second spot. In the VP Racing Fuels heat #3 it was Hopkinsville, Ky’s Trent Young taking the win over Weasel Rhodes. The fourth and final heat was sponsored by Comp Cams and West Portsmouth, Ohio’s Doug Adkins taking the win with Clay City, Ky Keith Smith coming home in second spot. In the B-main events it was Devin Gilpin taking the win in the first race with Shawn Tolson taking the checkers in the second one. In the feature event it was Elkton, Ky’s Clay Miller out front at the green flag with Trent Young in pursuit. A four car accident on lap seven slowed the field as Flanary, Adkins, Derrick Davis, and Rocky Wilson were all involved. Following the caution it was Miller out front of Young again but all eyes were on the 77 machine of Hanover, Indiana’s Joey Kramer who started 11th and had worked his way to fourth position and Gilpin who had worked his way from 17th to 10th in those first seven laps. Miller would once again slowly pull away from the field but the action was furious behind him as Young, Kramer, Bretz, Rhodes, and Gilpin would fight for the 2nd thru 6th positions. The field would be slowed on lap 24 caution for a five car pileup in turn two that would involve Jimmy Payne, Shawn Tolson, Jimmy Lennex, Kieth Smith, and Larry Pickelheimer. On the restart Miller would again jump out front but it would not last as Kramer would jump to the outside and take the top position away from Miller and set sail for his second feature win of the season at MRP. Kramer driving his Lightning Chassis would lead the final five laps to win his 13th feature of the season. Miller would come home second with Gilpin, Young, and Rhodes rounding out the top five positions.
In the Mt Orab Ford Late Model Division it was John Whitney Jr claiming the first heat race checkers while North Vernon, Indiana’s Alan Magner would claim heat race #2. In the feature it was Whitney out front in his Stephens Heating and Cooling, Barker Fab sponsored machine but Mark Frazier from Chillicothe would show his strength and jump out to the top spot on lap two. Frazier was quickly being chased by Richmond, Indiana’s Duane Chamberlain but it looked like Frazier was going to hold him off and claim his first ever victory at Moler but a bobble off of turn two with 6 laps remaining would give Chamberlain just enough room to take over the top spot and claim his 2nd feature victory of the season in the Gary Engle #15 machine. Frazier would hold on for second position followed by Whitney, Barry Doss, and Magner rounding out the top five positions.
The Holman Motor Chevettes were getting ready for next week’s $1500 Holman Motor special and it looked as though Rusty Yarger was going to have a hard time keeping his 3 race win streak in tact as Josh Francis was very fast in claiming heat race checkers. Not to be outdone Yarger also claimed checkers in his heat and the lineups were set with those two cars on the front row. At the green Yarger jumped out front and despite numerous cautions that would slow the feature event it was always Yarger out front with Francis on his bumper. At the checkered it was Yarger claiming his fourth win in a row and fifth on the season in his Northwest Transmission, Wilson Body Shop sponsored machine. Francis would claim a close second with “Boog” Verdon, Davis, and Tom Arp rounding out the top five positions.
In the Crazy Compact Division it was Justin Dalton claiming the checkered flag in the heat race but in the feature it was Bainbridge, Ohio’s Rex Smith Jr winning his 3 feature of the season. Willis Butler would take second spot with a last lap pass on Rob Simpson while Michael Hensley and Dalton would round out the top five finishers. 6-29 – Holman Motors Firecracer 400 Chevettes $1000 to Win, plus Mt.
