Sunday, June 24, 2012 ASA Pro Trucks Wow the Fans at Meridian Speedway
 by Randy Kerr
MERIDIAN, Idaho -- In the first of only two stops at Meridian Speedway, fans were treated to some action packed, door to door, side-by-side, hard core racing action on the tight quarter mile bullring. A-Heat Race winner Johnny Pierre and Alan Larson broke away from the field early in the fifty lap main event but the first caution for a single car spin on lap twenty quickly eliminated the quarter lap lead they had built over the field. After another twenty-one laps of hard racing, the fender of the Larson truck came loose landing in the middle of the backstretch bringing out the second caution and setting up the field for a nine-lap shootout. ?I think everyone could see a new opportunity to win with the double file cone restart, you know those things always create excitement for the fans and usually cost a few drivers a fender or two. I think we made four attempts before getting to lap forty-two and had three or four trucks in the pits with damage. You really hate to see it but it really was just hard racing. In a series, that has so many trucks that essentially run the same lap times you can see some of it coming. As much as we hate to admit it the fans or a huge part of them seemed to love it. I could hear them all the way in the pits,? said series director Randy Kerr after the race. When it all shook out, John Newhouse found his way to the winners circle. Newhouse captured the most points in the night. This is something you would not think too much about where he was competing in his first start of the season but, the unique substitute program the ASA Pro Trucks have allows Hannah Newhouse to get the points as long as she competes in more than half of the total races in the season in the same truck. Hannah running a local Late Model program had a race and could not be at both races. She brought home a win in the Late Model while her father took her truck to Victory Lane in Meridian. Point leader Jerry Rice maintained his point lead with his second place finish. ?Running side-by-side with Drew (Reitsma) was a blast! He is so much fun to run with, you know he will race you hard and clean and it?s just fun. On that one restart I was outside of Johnny and I knew I didn?t have anything for him but, I had to mess with him? as Rice smiled talking about leaning on Newhouse on the last restart. Reitsma maintained second in the season standings with another top three finish coming across the line just four hundredths of a second behind Rice. Reitsma has not been outside of the top three all season. After one win and a disappointing finish at Rocky Mountain Raceway Scott Luttmer was able to salvage a fourth place finish after being what is sometimes called the meat in the sandwich on the last restart. Luttmer found himself in the middle of a three wide and was able to drop out of it and slide past both the other trucks after they singled back out. That move earned Luttmer the ?Cool Move of the Race? award presented with a $50 gift certificate to Ultra Cool Brake Fans. Ultra Cool is a proud supporter of the ASA Racing and the ASA Pro Truck Series. Ultra Cool can be found at www.ultracoolbrakefans.com. Johnny Pierre held on for a fifth place finish. ?I feel really bad for my crew these guys work there tails off and we have been really fast because of it. I just can?t seem to get the finishes they deserve.? Pierre has wasted no time getting to the front early in the races but his finishes do not reflect the crew, driver or trucks ability. The ASA Pro Trucks will return to action at Rocky Mountain Raceway on July 7th. It will be the only event of thetwenty twelve season where fans can see the ASA Pro Trucks and the Rocky Mountain Challenge series on the same night.
