BANKS, Ore. -- The spirit and memory of great man will be honored this coming Saturday August 4th for the annual Doug Walters Classic. Doug Walters was instrumental in getting Sunset Speedway Park on the map by introducing the ASCS-Northwest Region to the ¼ mile oval as well as one of the driving forces in introduction Crate Late Models to the Northwest. The event will culminate with the sixty-seven (Walters’ old number) lap feature for the DAA Northwest Extreme Late Model Series presented by Sherwin-Williams Automotive Finishes with other classes in action being USRA Modifieds, Street Stocks, Pure Stocks, and the Womens divisions.

There have been three races in tribute to Walters with the last two under the DAA banner while the first, taking place in 2009, was a DirtCar Northwest I-5 Series event. The result has been the same in all three installments with Doug’s son Greg winning each and every one of them. Walters already has one win with the DAA Series this year a series in which he is the two-time and defending champion. There have been two Late Model events this year and there have been two different winners those being Terry Ferrando and Jerry Schram.

The USRA Modifieds are coming of their week off still looking for their first repeat winner of the 2012 season. Clint Petty, Sonny Sayre, Doug Lockwood, Mark Reser, and the Dancin Bare Topless 100 winner Mark Wauge have won point events and Ken Schrader won a non-point event in June during the Wild Wild West Modified Shootout event.

Ron Jermann earned the big victory in the Jim’s Thriftway 100 which occurred last week joining the win list amongst some very fast competitors this year. Craig Loomis lead the division in wins this year with a total of three while Tanner Baldwin has a point victory as well as the non-point Street Stock-Pure Stock Challenge credited to his name. Jeff Lovell, Rob Ireland, and Marc Farrar also have accumulated one win apiece.

Joey Tardio leads the win column for the Pure Stocks with three victories this year and is the only repeat winner in 2012. Stan Asonovic, Robert Summerhalder, and Shawn Long all have managed to record wins in the classification after eight features.

In the last race report a slight error was recorded in that Andrea Tardio leads the Women’s class with the most wins. She does indeed have a total of three wins which only two are point events and one a non-point race which took place on July 7th. Freya Smith has two wins to her credit this year and Jamie Walters only has earned one win.

For Saturday’s action the front Gates open up at 3:30 with racing scheduled to start at 6:00. Admission is the following prices: Adults are $13, Seniors $10, Children (6-12) $5, Children (5 and Under) FREE, and Family Pack (2 Adults and 2 Children) $30.

The Sunset Speedway Park is located just west of the Portland metro area in Banks on the Sunset Highway.
