Raceway Park Adds IMCA Modifieds to Sunday Shows

JEFFERSON, S.D. -- A fourth sanctioned division joins Sunday programs at Raceway Park in 2010, with the addition of IMCA Modifieds to weekly shows.

“We’ve raced Modifieds the last two years without them being sanctioned. We’ve averaged 14-15 cars a night and hope to get more with the division being IMCA,” promoter Ron Jensen explained.

Jensen and track owner Tom Reed brought IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars, IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks and Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods to the 3/10- mile high-banked dirt venue this year and saw average weekly car counts increase from 63 in 2008 to 83.

“We had a pretty good season,” Jensen said. “We’ve already gotten drainage work done and have seeded the infield as well as the racing surface to prevent erosion before we can get back on it next spring.”

Other projects on the to-do list at Jefferson include expanding the pit area to accommodate another 30 cars, installation of new lighting, rebuilding the flag stand, permanent restroom facilities and moving the digital scoreboard some 100 yards to the west, out of the infield and to the far side of the back chute.

Cement barriers on the front straightaway will also be moved, with the work area relocated to the back straight.

IMCA Modifieds ran at the former Interstate Speedway during eight previous seasons, most recently in 2005.

Modified points eared at Raceway Park will apply in the ButlerBuilt North Central Region. Both the Stock Cars and the Hobby Stocks are in the Jet Racing Northern Region for their respective divisions.

Opening night will be in April, with weekly point races scheduled through Sept. 5.
