Hot and Dusty at RPM Speedway
by Mike Hughes
HAYS, Kan. -- With 100 degree plus weather, along with strong southerly winds, made for a hot and dusty night at RPM Speedway in Hays, KS, Saturday evening, June 23.
Oberlin’s David Murray Jr. picked up his fifth Teels Trucks IMCA Modified feature win at the 3/8-mile oval this season. Brian Calhoon led the opening lap before John Fose took the point. After a caution on lap 4, Nate Moore took the lead from Fose on the restart. Moore led the field to the halfway point of the 20-lap race before Murray was finally able to make a pass on Moore on lap 12 after trying several times for several laps. Murray drove away for the win, while ‘The Terminator’ Travis Sherfick nipped out Moore for the runner-up spot on the last lap. Fose and Corey Lagroon finished fourth and fifth. Heat race winners were Calhoon, Moore and Fose.
‘The Spiderman’ Nick Tubbs of Colby continues to be the man to beat in the Advantage Glass Plus IMCA Stock Car division as he picked up his fifth win of the year at RPM Speedway. Tubbs slowly reeled in Bedore and attempted several passes, but to no avail. Then on lap 17 as the duo came out of turn two, Tubbs went to the high side down the backstretch and won the drag race into turn 3 to take the lead and hold on for the victory. Bedore finished second, followed by Terry Cunningham, Josh ‘The Hammer’ Hudson, and Adam Balthazor. Cunningham and Bedore were victorious in the two heat races.
Point leader Jake Krone won his third Golden Plains Trucking IMCA Sport Mod feature in a row as he passed early leader Cory Struckhoff on lap 6 of the 15-lap main event. Blaine Walt raced his way to second, followed by Struckhoff, heat 3 winner Clay Money, and Josh Appel. Cory McGann and Kaid Calhoon also won heat races.
Cody ‘Bam Bam’ Graham of Hays became the 6th different feature winner in the Rebel Tank Service IMCA Hobby Stock division as there have been no repeat winners in that class yet this season. ‘Neon’ Leon Pfannenstiel led the first 12 laps of the 15-lap race before Graham was finally able to make the pass. Point leader Jeromy Wagner finished second, trailed by Pfannenstiel, heat two winner Garrett ‘The Wild Child’ Hager, and Brian Stich. Graham and Brian Stich also won heat races.
Hometown driver Shyla Hughes became the first repeat winner in the Steel Fabrications IMCA Sport Compact class. Point leaderMonte Honas passed early leader Trevor ‘The Hit Man’ Schmidt on lap 5 and looked to be cruising the remainder of the 12-lap race for his second win of the season. But troubles hit Honas the final lap as he appeared to lose power and Hughes made the pass for the trip to victory lane. Allen Rice, and heat race winners Schmidt and Vincent Jasper finished second through fourth, as Honas limped across in fifth.
The evening’s races were sponsored by Gib’s Auto Supply of Hays and Lacrosse, your local NAPA dealers.
