Bristol Shakes Up Points Battle for Top-10, Wild-Card

This past weekend’s race at Bristol Motor Speedway shook up the points standings in a big way, with several drivers in the top-10 and wild-card positions suffering misfortune. Tony Stewart was involved in an accident with Matt Kenseth, dropping Stewart to 10th in the points standings. Stewart is in desperate need of a good run this weekend at Atlanta, as three wins all but locks him into the Chase, but falling outside the top-10 would result in a loss of the bonus points for those wins that he’d get if he is in the top-10 following Richmond.

Teammate Ryan Newman was also swept up in a wreck, knocking him from the second wild-card position and moving Kyle Busch into the current spot for that. Kasey Kahne, with his two wins, continues to hold down the first wild-card berth.

With drivers like Stewart and Kevin Harvick hovering around the 10th-spot in the standings, and drivers like Kahne, Busch and Carl Edwards hovering within striking distance, as well as wild-card eligible drivers like Jeff Gordon, Newman, Marcos Ambrose and Joey Logano, this weekend’s AdvoCare 500 is a must-win for many drivers looking to hold on and clinch a spot in the Chase for the Sprint Cup.

Jeff Foxworthy to Visit AMS on Friday

Georgia-native and comedian Jeff Foxworthy will be introducing his new brand of Grit Chips to the world this September, but their public debut will take place on Friday, Aug. 31 as Foxworthy and his unique twist on the classic Southern staple will proudly sponsor the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at AMS.

Foxworthy will be at the speedway on Friday to promote that evening’s Jeff Foxworthy’s Grit Chips 200. Foxworthy will visit with fans in the Fan Zone on Friday. Giving the command to fire the engines to the drivers in the field as Grand Marshal will be Larry Burns, CEO of Foxworthy Outdoor. Jay Foxworthy, VP of Foxworthy Outdoor, will waive the green flag to start the race.

Richard Petty 1992 Car on Display

Atlanta Motor Speedway is recognizing the 20th anniversary of the 1992 Hooters 500, the race that many deem as the greatest NASCAR race of all-time. That day marked Jeff Gordon’s first-career start, Richard Petty’s last ride in the No. 43 and the crowning of one of the closest championship battles ever.

Petty’s famous No. 43 car went up in flames that day due to a wreck on lap 94, and that piece of NASCAR history will be on display at AMS during the race weekend. The battered and burned Pontiac that Petty wheeled that November day will be located at the Goody’s display in the Fan Zone throughout the race weekend for fans to visit.

NASCAR night racing returns to Atlanta Motor Speedway on Labor Day weekend, Aug. 31-Sept. 2, 2012. Reserve your AdvoCare 500 tickets now. For more information, call the Atlanta Motor Speedway ticket office at (877) 9-AMS-TIX, (770) 946-4211 or visit www.atlantamotorspeedway.com.
