Larry Morgan: Changing Conditions Did not Hurt Grip

by Lee Elder, Goodyear Racing

LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Larry Morgan quenched a seven-year drought when he captured victory in the NHRA Las Vegas Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Morgan’s previous win came at Sonoma in 2002, but he obviously hasn’t forgotten how to race. On his way to the win at Las Vegas, he beat former NHRA Pro Stock champion Jason Line in the first round, the probable 2009 champion Mike Edwards in the second round and former NHRA Pro Stock Truck champ Greg Stanfield in the third. Morgan beat Ricky Jones in the final round.

Since his first Pro Stock start at Pomona in 1987, Morgan has won 11 races in 32 final round appearances and one of his assets is his ability to work with his Goodyear tires. He used the same set of four tires for four qualifying runs and four elimination passes at Las Vegas.

“I just couldn’t change them,” he said. “We were running so well.”

Morgan said he can get as many as 25 passes on a set of tires.

The racing conditions at Las Vegas changed constantly, from warm and sunny afternoons with track temperatures over 100 degrees to evenings when the track temperature was 76.

“Everything was good,” Morgan said. “We came with a set of tires that had five runs on them. We did not have a problem with grip.”

Morgan drives the Lucas Oil-sponsored Dodge. He lives in Newark, Ohio.
