 by Dave Menefee
MANASSAS, Va. -- First time winners were abundant at the Old Dominion Speedway Saturday Night, as 3 of the 5 feature winners were able to notch their first career wins at the famed 3/8 mile oval. Tyler Hughes from Cordova Md. picked up his first ever feature win in the first of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Stock Twin 50 lap events, taking the lead from Doug Liberman on lap 8. Hughes, the 2011 INEX Legends track champ at ODS, then cruised to the win, taking the checkers by 1.463 seconds over Davey Callihan. Callihan would bounce back in the second feature, dominating the event from start to finish, taking home his second feature win in as many weeks to claim win number two in 2012. With his first and second place finish, Callihan now finds himself atop the points chase in the Late Model division for the first time in his career, 8 markers ahead of defending track champ David Polenz.
First time winner number two came in the Legends 30 lap event as Cody Scott, who has been looking for the first “W” for three years now, finally got that elusive win as he battled with point leader Ryan Polenz through the event. Polenz tried on several occasions to take the top spot, but at the end, it was Scott who had the stronger ride, taking the checkers by just .232 seconds ahead of Polenz. Up until now, Scott had notched an incredible 25 top 5 finishes over the past three seasons.
First time winner number three came in the Bandolero division as Jake Lowe held off the fierce challenges of point leader Jonathan Findley and Ryan Plummer from the drop of the green to take home his first career feature win at ODS. Starting from the front row, Lowe ran perfect laps throughout the 20 lap event, and crossed the stripe .589 seconds ahead of Findley, who was able to make a last lap pass on Plummer to claim the runner-up spot.
Keith Riley led flag to flag in the 25 lap Mini Modified division, taking home his first feature win in 2012. Nick Johnston came home second after veteran Mike Carte developed mechanical issues late and the going and dropped out of the event. Todd Johnston finished third, while Kevin Davis finished fourth.
Next Saturday nigh the Late Models will be featured in a 75 lap event, along with a 30 lap feature for the Legends, 20 laps for the UCAR’s, 20 laps for the Bandoleros, Twin features for the Street Stocks, and a feature event for the Va. Sprint Series. Practice begins at 2PM, with qualifying set for 5PM. Racing takes the green at 7PM.
