Friday, July 13, 2012 Racers Battle Hard at Legendary Road America for Rounds 7 & 8 of the Skip Barber Racing School Presents the Mazda Summer Series

BRASELTON, Ga. -- The Skip Barber Racing School traveled to legendary Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin to Road America for Rounds 7 & 8 of the Skip Barber Racing School Presents the 2012 Mazda Summer Series. Newcomer Aaron Telitz took his first win of the series. On the MAZDASPEED Challenge side, Bryan Hixon and Kenton Koch continue the battle for championship points as they both take home a win. Andrew Hobbs and Jack Mitchell Jr. also celebrated wins for the weekend. Eidson still leads the Formula Skip Barber Championship Points with Adrian Starrintino only six points behind. For the MAZDASPEED Challenge, Kenton Koch and David Levine are leading the point standings, but Bryan Hixon closes the gap and is only three points behind. The Skip Barber Racing School Presents the 2012 Mazda Summer Series will travel to Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, CT for Rounds 9 & 10 of the Formula Skip Barber and MAZDASPEED Challenge.
Jono Klein and Andrew Hobbs break away from the group on the first lap with Yukio Duzanowski close behind. Early in the race, both drivers trade the lead multiple times. As the top two battle, Dean Patzer manages to catch up. As Duzanowski moves up to take the lead, Klein takes it away quickly. Aaron Telitz also makes a pop for the top spot. He manages to move up and take the lead but Patzer and Andrew Hobbs are close behind. Top three begin to form a lead pack. Multiple penalties shuffle the finishing order. Aaron Telitz comes away with his first win. Andrew Hobbs and Jason Kelin finish second and third.
After the first lap, Andrew Hobbs manages to extend his lead from the rest of the pack. Meanwhile, behind Hobbs, the rest of the field continues to battle each other for position. The group showcases aggressive drafting and manages to stay with one another. In lap 7, Greg Strelzoff and Todd Soukup break away from the pack. Hobbs takes the win with a comfortable lead ahead of Greg Strelzoff who takes second. Todd Soukup takes third.

Group 2, Race 1 Skip Barber Presents the Mazda Summer Series, MAZDASPEED Challenge
Kenton Koch leads at the start followed by Brett Hawkins and Ben Albano. Cal Meeker gets into the wall, which brings out the pace car. After the restart and some shuffling, Kenton Koch and Bryan Hixon break away from the pack. The two battle for the lead for the rest of the race. Behind them, Auriemma overtakes Albano. Auriemma works his way up to the leaders and challenges Koch but fades back as he defends his position from Albano. Koch makes a final push on the last lap, but Hixon holds on to win. Koch finishes second with Auriemma finishing third.
Group 2, Race 2 Skip Barber Presents the Mazda Summer Series, MAZDASPEED Challenge
Bryan Hixon starts the race in first. Michael Auriemma, Kenton Koch, and Daniel Conway are close behind. Koch makes his move all the way up to the front. He and Hixon begin to break away from the pack again. Albano battles with Brett Hawkins for third. Conway moves into this middle group. Koch continues to hold on to the lead despite Hixon’s best efforts. They finish one and two with Albano in third.

Group 3, Race 1 Skip Barber Presents the MAZDASPEED Cup Summer Series, Skip Barber Formula
Tristan Degrand starts with the lead but quickly falls back and Jack Mitchell Jr. overtakes the lead. There’s tight racing early on among the top four of Mitchell, Degrand, Matt McMurry and Danilo Estrela. The front pack continues battling one another, but Estrela and Degrand would be later penalized and thus forfeits their podium spot. Due to the penalty, Mitchell Jr. and McMurry take control of the pack. Mitchell Jr. takes first and McMurry is close behind with a second place finish. Greg Strelzoff manages to out pace the pack to get a third place spot.
Group 3, Race 2 Skip Barber Presents the MAZDASPEED Cup Summer Series, Skip Barber Formula
There were a lot of position changes at the beginning of this race. Micthell started up front but Tristan Degrand and Greg Strelzoff also led some within the first few laps. Danilo Estrela takes the led from Strelzoff but can’t hold it. After another lead change, Mitchell makes his move on lap 6, but it wasn’t until his lead on lap 8 that he took control. Battling among Estrela, Degrand and Strelzoff allowed a little cushion for Mitchell who won. It was Estrela with a late charge to finish second followed by Degrand and Stelzoff.

Group 4, Race 1 Skip Barber Presents the Summer Series, MAZDASPEED Challenge
Kenton Koch leads the pack to the green flag. Greg Holloway, who began the race in second, gets off the line and drops back. Bryan Hixon battles his way through the pack to challenge Koch. Michael Auriemma , Cal Meeker and Greg Holloway trail in the middle pack. Hixon attempts a couple aggressive passes, but Koch is able to hold him off and extend his lead. Hixon closes the gap late but can’t complete the pass. Koch wins followed closely by Hixon. Auriemma won the battle in the middle pack to finish third.
Group 4, Race 2 Skip Barber Presents the Summer Series, MAZDASPEED Challenge
Kenton Koch has the pole in the second race for Group 4. A battle for second and third allow Koch to pull away from Bryan Hixon and Cal Meeker. Hixon closes the gap to briefly take the lead from Koch but Koch does not give up the first spot easily and takes it back from Hixon. As racers enter the last half of the race, the battle continues for the top spot. Hixon doesn't give up and continues pushing hard for the top spot. A little damage late in the race brings out a yellow and gives Hixon one last chance. Koch manages to hold on to sweep the group. Hixon finishes second with Cal Meeker in third.

Group 5, Race 1 Skip Barber Presents the Summer Series, Formula Skip Barber
Adrian Starrintino led after the first lap. Jake Eidson, Aaron Teliz and Matt McMurry are close behind. Eidson moves into first going into the third lap of the race. The pack is single file with Eidson leading, but Starrintino doesn't give up. He manages to take the lead from Eidson heading into an exciting final few laps. The four-car train pushes each other. Another intense battle arises for second between Eidson and Teliz. Starrintino holds on for the win followed by Eidson and Teliz with McMurry just outside the podium.
Group 5, Race 2 Skip Barber Presents the Summer Series, Formula Skip Barber
After the green flag start is waved, Aaron Teliz leads after the lap 2. Adrian Starrintino passes Teliz to take the lead of a pack that also included Matt McMurry and Jake Eidson. Eidson gets an open black on lap 3 leaving Starrintino, Teliz and McMurry up front. Teliz retakes the lead on lap 8 and holds on to win with Starrintino and McMurry close behind rounding out the podium.
